This web page was designed out of frustration with coming up with unique character names in World of Warcraft.
The naming styles for many Non-player Characters were relatively consistent across race or faction and it was my thinking that my character names should try to follow suit.
I had seen a nifty Markov based random word generator over at Oh The Huge Manatee and found that this little Javascript applet did a wonderful job of putting names together with variable tunable parameters.
I turned it into a PHP based application pulling from local lists of files and this name generator was born!
You can parse your own files by selecting it with the file-select above, and it will give you names based on your OWN list as well.
Each of the names is linked to Google to perform a quick search. This is intended to keep me from naming my characters something that looks cool but might mean something totally inappropriate either in or out of context (especially in a foreign language).
There's also a link to Armory to help ensure the name isn't already taken (Armory only lists active characters over level 10).
A name that comes up with an asterisk (*) notes where the generator ran out of retries and gave up, making it a word already in the dictionary or in the list.
The Multiple Words checkbox will split names or words into phrases and return phrase-built results (Good for first name / last name).
Recommended Settings for Guild Names: Try Minimum Length of 3, Number of Retries 200, Chunk Size 4, Name Length 24 and Multiple Words checked.
A larger chunk size on any listing will give more plausible names but come up with fewer unique entries.
(you can click on the [X] in the corner of this big ugly box to close it)
